About US

Sword Billed Expeditions is an Ecuadorian-based company with many years' experience in tourism and guiding in-country. Our goal is to provide the best service and expertise for you, the customer, while at the same time striving to protect the environment and the wildlife you come here to enjoy. Ten percent of the profit made from every tour is dedicated to the purchase of land essential to the conversation of our rarest and most threatened species. If you would like to be a part of this dream (and experience the most fabulous birding in the Americas), please contact us!

WHY THE NAME? We chose the Sword-billed Hummingbird as our "mascot" because this stunning creature is one of the most sought-after birds by birders visiting Ecuador; people love to see it, and it's little wonder why that is so!

We have various guides specializing in general nature, birding, and culture, who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with you! Every one of our guides are native Ecuadorians and are certified by the Government of Tourism to work legally in Ecuador. They "know their stuff" and are committed to excellence, and we're very proud of that! Our team is not only professional, but each member connects well with their clients and becomes more than just "the guide": he becomes a true friend!

                                                  OUR TEAM

BERTHA LARREA (General Manager)

Also from Quito, Bertha (32) also has a degree in tourism. She lived in the United States for nine years where she obtained a degree as a Teaching Assistant. Now she is back in Ecuador where she lives with her husband and two children. She will be responsible for every detail of your trip, and will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have. She speaks English and Spanish and (needless to say) loves tourism!

EDISON BUENAÑO (Bird Guide)

Born in Riobamba, Edison (33) has been working as a bird guide for Mindo Bird Tours, Bird Holidays, and Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, as well as other eco-tour friendly outfits for twelve years.
He has a degree in Tourism Management and a Tour Guide License for Ecuador and its national parks, but his passion is birding; his knowledge of bird vocalizations is second to none! He also guides in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and the Galapagos. Edison speaks English, French, and Spanish.

DIEGO ANDRADE (Tour Guide)

Also from Riobamba, Diego (35) was the lead guide at Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve for about two years and is now guiding all over the country. He studied at the Tourism University at Instur where he acquired his Tour Guide Degree, and also is fully licensed as an Ecuadorian tour guide.
He provides enthusiastic leadership for the cultural and general nature tours, and speaks Italian, English, and Spanish.
